Volvo marks EV milestones at ACT Expo

Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) celebrated recent electric vehicle milestones at the ACT Expo show last week in Anaheim, Calif.

The company says its zero-emission trucks have now traveled 15 million miles (24 million km) in North America. More than 700 VNR Electric trucks are now operating in the U.S. and Canada.

“We know that we live in a challenging time when it comes to deploying zero-tailpipe emission vehicles. There are long delays in getting charging infrastructure, regulatory uncertainty, including the future of grants and incentives to adopting battery-electric trucks, but we have continued to see customers defy the odds and add zero emissions vehicles to their fleet,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president, Volvo Trucks North America.

“Globally, Volvo Trucks is in the lead when it comes to market share with battery-electric trucks; that lead includes also leading here in North America. We will continue to support our customers in their transition to sustainable transportation solutions by providing the highest quality products, robust dealer support and innovative financing options.”

Volvo also teased a new VNL Electric, which will add to its EV portfolio. It will use a new e-axle to extend range, Voorhoeve said. No specific date was announced for the introduction.

In an interview with TruckNews.com, Voorhoeve said Volvo’s journey to zero-emissions will not be affected by uncertainties around federal emissions regulations in the U.S.

“We have our own strategy when it comes to sustainability. That strategy doesn’t change,” Voorhoeve said.

Volvo’s strategy continues to be three-pronged: battery-electric; fuel-cell-electric; and direct injection with clean fuels.

The company’s dealer network also continues to become EV-certified in order to sell and service electric trucks. Volvo now has 74 dealer locations in 29 states and four provinces that have achieved EV certification. The latest in Canada is Vision Truck Group’s Etobicoke, Ont., location.

Another 20 locations are in the certification process, Volvo says, with more than half expected to compete the certification this year.
