Schmitz Cargobull has announced the passing of company owner Dr Heinz Schmitz, who died on 17 October 2025 at the age of 88.
A member of the third generation of the founding family, Dr Schmitz played a defining role in transforming Schmitz Cargobull from a regional trailer manufacturer into a global technology and market leader. Under his leadership, the company expanded its production capabilities, modernised its processes and strengthened its international presence.
Together with his cousin Peter Schmitz, Dr Schmitz helped steer the company through decades of growth and change, introducing a strategic focus on innovation, quality and customer satisfaction. His vision led to the introduction of modular production systems and the establishment of international assembly plants—laying the foundation for Schmitz Cargobull’s global success.
Beyond his work within the company, Dr Schmitz was deeply committed to the wider trailer and commercial vehicle industry. From 1993 to 2000, he served on the Executive Committee of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), representing trailer, body and container manufacturers and advocating for the interests of medium-sized enterprises.
Colleagues and employees remember Dr Schmitz as a man of integrity, responsibility and foresight, whose approach combined strong business acumen with a deep sense of duty to customers, partners and employees alike. Even after his retirement, he remained closely connected to the company and its people.
Schmitz Cargobull extended its deepest sympathies to Dr Schmitz’s family and loved ones, honouring his life’s work and lasting impact on the business and the industry.
