Nearly 1,500 natural gas stations available to support trucks in Canada, US in 2026

1 min read

The number of existing natural gas fueling stations has risen to 1,466 across Canada and the United States, with 1,385 stations dispensing compressed natural gas (CNG) and 81 stations dispensing liquified natural gas (LNG).

This is according to the latest refueling infrastructure report released by The Transport Project (TTP) on Dec. 15.

As natural gas refueling infrastructure continues to expand heading into 2026, operational CNG stations are now located in 47 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. That is a 2% increase in CNG stations coming online year over year, the report said.

Of those stations, 46% are equipped to accommodate Class 8 Trucks, and 53% are publicly accessible.

In U.S., California continues to lead the country with 318 CNG stations, followed by Oklahoma (99), Texas (95), Pennsylvania (72) and Florida (59). Rounding out the Top 10 states with CNG infrastructure are Georgia (49), Wisconsin (44), New York (44), Ohio (43) and Utah (40).

And more than half of all CNG stations nationwide — 51% — now directly dispense renewable natural gas (RNG), highlighting its role in the fleet’s journey to clean transportation.

Last year, 86% of all natural gas motor fuel dispensed for transportation use in the US was RNG, according to TTP.

According to TTP’s online database, Canada currently has 107 natural gas stations, including 37 public and 70 private CNG and LNG locations. Of those, 31 public and 54 private stations can accommodate Classes 7-8 trucks. Renewable natural gas is available for heavy-duty vehicles at eight public stations and 10 private sites.
