The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has said in a memo that previously granted Ontario International Registration Plan (IRP) extensions will not be extended past June 30.
MTO granted extension to IRP registered carriers with plates expiring between March 31 and May 31, in efforts to allow MTO and Service Ontario to stabilize the IRP system, according to an Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) news release.
The memo urges carriers with renewals that expire between March 31 and June 30, that have not yet renewed to submit applications as soon as possible. In the event of a Canada Post strike, carriers are encouraged to submit their IRP renewal applications online or by email.

“The OTA appreciates the work to date from Service Ontario and MTO to stabilize a system that has caused our members and owner operators significant financial hardship and crippling operational disruptions over the past few months during one of worst freight recessions of the past 40 years,” Geoff Wood, OTA’s senior vice-president, policy, said in the release. “This type of wide system failure can never happen again, and we won’t let it. OTA will be working diligently with MTO and Service Ontario to ensure systems and resources are in place to prevent a repeat.”
The OTA will continue to monitor the IRP program to ensure all service commitment timelines are being met and that a multi-pronged strategy is in place to address surges in applications like those expected in the September-October timeframe.
