Roadcheck to focus on driver’s record of duty status, vehicle’s tires

1 min read

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck is scheduled for May 13-15. The high-visibility, high-volume commercial motor vehicle inspection and regulatory compliance enforcement initiative takes place over three days in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

This year, International Roadcheck will have two focus areas – the driver’s record of duty status and the vehicle’s tires.

During the driver portion of an inspection, inspectors check the driver’s documents, licence or commercial driver’s license, medical examiner’s certificate and skill performance certificate (if applicable), record of duty status, Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse status (in the U.S.), seat belt usage, and alcohol and/or drug impairment.

Inspectors will check tires’ tread depth and proper inflation. They will also be on the lookout for tire damage, such as air leaks, tread separation, cuts, bulges, sidewall damage and improper repairs.

In 2024, Canadian enforcement teams placed 33.2% of inspected vehicles out of service during the international Roadcheck blitz that was conducted May 14-16, compared to a 23.2% out-of-service rate in the U.S.

Teams completed 5,411 Level I, II and III inspections on this side of the border, placing 1,798 vehicles and 102 drivers out of service, the CVSA reported. In the U.S., there were 42,332 inspections, with 7,930 vehicles and 2,151 drivers placed out of service.

CVSA-certified law enforcement personnel will inspect commercial motor vehicles and drivers this year at weigh/inspection stations, temporary sites and mobile patrols to verify compliance with federal, state, provincial or territorial regulations. Data from the 72 hours of International Roadcheck will be collected and the results will be released this summer.
