Susan Ewart, executive director of Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA), was named the Women with Drive 2025 Leadership Award recipient at Trucking HR Canada’s 11th annual Women with Drive leadership summit in Toronto, Ont.
“The award was inspired by the many trailblazing women working to keep the Canadian supply chain moving, it acknowledges their commitment to never leaving anyone behind, dedication to supporting their peers and supporting the next generation of our workforce,” said Angela Splinter, Trucking HR Canada CEO during the summit on March 6. “Susan has shown outstanding leadership over the last decade, both at the national level, provincial, and at our board level,” added Stephen Laskowski, president of Canadian Trucking Alliance, in a congratulatory video presented at the event.
One of Eward’s projects was the establishment of the STA Women Shifting Gears program in 2020. Developed in partnership with the Saskatoon YWCA and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Immigration and Career Training, the three-phase program combines classroom instruction with work placements to help women enter the trucking industry.
In her acceptance speech, Ewart said she’s always believed in making space for women, empowering them, amplifying their voices, and ensuring they have opportunities to grow.
“When I first heard the word trailblazer, I thought, ‘Me? Really? I just show up every day and do what I love,’” she said. “I’ve always found myself drawn to nontraditional roles in male-dominated industries. It’s like I have a thing for a good challenge. Before trucking, I was a business owner in another heavily male-dominated space, breaking ground and shaking things up. I guess trailblazing has been a habit of mine all along. But here’s the truth – no one does this alone. The trucking industry is full of passionate, driven people, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work alongside some of the best in Saskatchewan and across Canada.”
