Electric truck maker Tern, a partnership between Hexagon Purus and Hino, has announced a tandem axle RC8 6×2.

It will be the company’s second vehicle and will enter production in Q3 2026 with deliveries beginning in early 2027, the company announced on LinkedIn.

“As our collaboration with Hino Motors has expands, we’ve kept our ears open. The feedback was clear: the industry needs a tandem 80k configuration to better serve fleets requiring greater load flexibility,” the company said in a post.

“With that, we are thrilled to announce that the Tern RC8 80k, 6×2 variant is here. This new addition to the lineup brings all the efficiency and driver-focused design of the RC8 to a heavier-duty application — perfect for higher GCW LTL, drayage, and many other applications.”

The new tandem axle offering is available for pre-order now.

Tern said its original RC8 platform performed well throughout its first year on the road.

“Drivers have been raving about the high visibility and ultra-maneuverable cab/chassis – paired with unmatched responsive power, and a crisp, and quiet driving experience, calling it ideal for complex and crowded city routes,” the company said.

Real-world use demonstrated an energy consumption of 1.79 kWh/mile, which Tern attributes to a proprietary adaptive accelerator map which improves driver efficiency.

Such energy consumption gives the RC8 a range of 260 miles (416 km) per charge, a 25% improvement over its promised range of 200 miles (320 km).
