The Canadian economy shed 41,000 jobs in July, StatCan reported this morning, but transportation and warehousing added 26,000, a gain of 2.4%.
That’s the first time the sector has added jobs since January and it led all other sectors in job growth in July. Year over year, employment in transportation and warehousing was flat.

Most of the job losses came among full-time workers in the private sector.
The unemployment rate stayed steady at 6.9%.
StatCan asked survey respondents how confident they are in their employment prospects in their current line of work. Not surprisingly, employees working in industries dependent on U.S. demand for Canadian exports were 7.1% points less likely to be very confident in their employment prospects compared to employees in other industries (48.5% vs. 55.6%).
Employees in industries dependent on U.S. demand for Canadian exports more often cited tariff-related uncertainty as the main reason for not being confident, compared with those in other industries (26.7% vs. 10.1%).
