Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning truck drivers to always double-check the dimensions of their load after a commercial vehicle struck an overpass on Highway 401, “peeling the roof right off of the truck” that was loaded on a trailer.
OPP said in an X post that the truck collided with the Shanly Road/County Rd 22 overpass on the westbound portion of the highway on June 25. “Fortunately, only the roof corners caught the bridge, leaving only marks and no significant damage. But this could have been much worse,” OPP said.

Ontario Ministry of Transportation officers assisted Grenville OPP with the inspection, and the driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with an over-height vehicle. OPP said that both drivers and operators can be held responsible for several offences relating to CMVs.
While the driver is responsible for how and when the vehicle is driven, the operator is still responsible for permitting the driver and vehicle to be on the road, and ensuring proper licencing and inspections are completed.
