The U.S. Department of Transportation plans to deploy artificial intelligence from Salesforce to develop a more efficient and responsive transportation system.

DOT will use Salesforce’s Agentforce AI platform to handle routine tasks and generate immediate alerts with proposed strategies for traffic and infrastructure incidents.

This represents an expansion of the relationship between DOT and Salesforce, which is already modernizing the agency’s data-sharing and federal grant-management programs.

“To deliver on our mission of building a safe, efficient, and modern transportation system, we have to start with making technology our biggest asset,” said Pavan Pidugu, DOT’s chief digital and information officer. “We needed to make a strategic shift to deliver on our mission: adding AI at the core of everything we’re doing. Now, we’re not just deploying new technology, we’re empowering our agency to work more effectively and, most importantly, ensuring the safety and future of our country’s transportation system.”

Salesforce said the modernization will enable DOT to easily facilitate vital data exchange among all 50 states through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

“By enabling immediate visibility into roadside inspection, driver, and carrier data allows, the FMCSA can more quickly identify and respond to dangerous drivers and safety risk — helping to keep dangerous drivers off the roads while ensuring compliance with federal safety regulations,” Salesforce said in a statement.
